May 2024: Reading, Watching, TCM Time

Reading:

For adults: This is Amiko, Do You Copy?  by Natsuko Imamura. The dissonance between Amiko, the childish narrator, and you, the adult reader, is compelling. An exploration on the violence of difference and indifference.

For 4 year olds: Life through Time: the 700-Million-Year Story of Life on Earth by John Woodward. Carefully distilled information about the most compelling prehistoric eras, it’s also a humbling and refreshing reminder of how short our own human existence has been.

For toddlers: Every Color of Light by Hiroshi Osada and Ryoji Arai, trans. David Boyd. In this book the natural world is the stage on which a storm performs. It’s simultaneously dynamic and tranquil. The illustrations are stunning.

Watching:

Polite Society  dir Nida Manzoor. If you like genre movies, this is the uber-genre movie for you. More specifically, it’s for feminist fans of Kung Fu Hustle who appreciate that the well-choreographed fight scenes externalize emotional turbulence, violence, and misogyny. Bonus: the costumes are fantastic.

TCM Time:

In TCM, being pregnant and birthing uses up qi and blood. The pregnant body is also dramatically transformed; organs, bones and flesh move around. The post-partum period is an important time to rest and recover and rebuild. It’s important for the new mom to sleep as much as possible, eat nourishing foods, and drink relaxing herbal teas.

In celebration of Mother’s Day, I’m offering 30% off treatments to all moms and caregivers for this month, until the next new moon on June 6th. Just mention this blog post!
